If your engine’s typical roar has been replaced with a clicking sound, a dead battery is likely to blame. Don’t let it completely derail your day. Our MINI service experts at Orlando MINI are highlighting the simple steps to jump-start your car.
Find a Power Source
If you have a portable battery charger available, you can use that to jump-start your vehicle. Make sure that you carefully follow the directions to safely do so. If you don’t have a portable charger, you’ll need another vehicle and jumper cables to charge yours.
Prepare the Vehicles
If you’re using another vehicle, it’s best for them to park parallel to your car or face it directly. Try to park as closely as you can, without hindering your ability to access your batteries. Then, you’ll want to turn off the engines, pop the hoods, and secure them each with the hood strut.
Hook Up the Jumper Cables
Once your vehicles are prepared, it’s time to attach the jumper cables:
- Connect the red (positive) clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery
- Connect the red (positive) clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery
- Connect the negative (black) clamp to the negative terminal of the working battery
- Connect the negative clamp to an unpainted metal portion of your car
Start the Cars
Once the jumper cables are securely attached, start the working car. Give the engine a little gas and leave it running for a few minutes. Then, start your car. If it works, make sure you keep it running for at least 15 minutes (which may include driving to your destination). Finally, disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that you attached them.
